Shola is a graduate of the National Film and Television School, where he made his award-winning graduation film Touch. His debut feature A Moving Image, a part-fictionalised account of the current gentrification of Brixton, premiered at the LA Film Festival and the BFI London Film Festival, and was released theatrically in the UK in 2017 through Verve Pictures.
Shola was commissioned by The British Council to direct a reinterpretation of Othello, called Dear Mr. Shakespeare. It was written by visual artist Phoebe Boswell as part of “Shakespeare Lives” and was released on The Guardian’s website. Dear Mr. Shakespeare was selected in competition for The Sundance Film Festival 2017.
Shola’s latest feature is a drama called The Last Tree, which Premiered at Sundance 2019 in The World Cinema Dramatic competition. The Film was supported by the BFI and Great Point Media.
From Nigerian descent, Shola tackles issues of race and identity in his work, which has an arresting visual style that blends fact and fiction together with powerful effect.
